Self Help Volunteer Support

1.0 INTRODUCTION

We at HEED have embraced a Mission statement that compels us to participate in activities that lead to prevention and/or alleviation of poverty and its’ offshoots in under-served communities such as those found in less developed countries. HEED is thus involved in forming viable partnerships with groupings from under-served communities in as far as commissioning and running development projects.

HEED has through surveys discovered the need for individuals and Community Based Organisations to initiate Self Help Projects that are development oriented. HEED prefers that self help projects are initiated by individuals and/or organisations who/that are based in the actual needy communities.

It must be emphasized that participating individuals and Community Based Organizations are obliged to contributing resources (however small) to the projects that they initiate (hence the name Self Help). As a related matter, HEED has recognised that the resource that is typically abundant in most under-served communities is labour. HEED has found it inevitable to thus harness this abundant resource to the benefit of needy communities.

The latter constitutes the reason why HEED found it inevitable to establish the Self Help Volunteer Support Program. Under this program, HEED assists needy Community Based Organizations by facilitating the process of mobilization of labour resources (Volunteers) for development projects. The said human resources are thereafter deployed by Community Based Organizations in various capacities to specific development projects.

Utilization of volunteers in self help development projects has advantages such as dedication of volunteers to specific projects, volunteers contributing material resources to projects (however small) etc. Where necessary HEED mobilizes skilled labour resources, especially in cases where the project design has included portions that require the services of specialized labour resources. HEED prefers that the said specialized human resources are not required for lengthy engagements.

It must be pointed out that HEED also facilitates the mobilization of financial resources (from donors) for acquisition of materials for Self Help Development Projects. The latter notwithstanding, does not exempt Community Based Organizations from contributing any material resources that are in their possession.

Where requested by donors, HEED continuously monitors and evaluates progress and/or success levels of projects that receive funding from specific donors.

It must be emphasized that the Self Help Volunteer Support Program is not intended for organisations that will make profits intended to benefit individuals or families. The intention is to engage in development projects whose output (goods, services or profit) will benefit entire communities. The said development projects must, to the furthest possible extent, exclude those functions that are the responsibility of local, provincial or national governments.
