1.0 INTRODUCTION
Heedmorine Municipal Institute espouses the notion of Academic Excellence with passion. As a related matter, Research (Basic and Applied), Publications and invitation of Guest Lecturers from peer institutions form an integral part of our institute’s Academic Excellence drive. Part of our Academic Support Process entails our Co-ordinator of Academic Activities to engage our Public Private Partners when mobilizing a host of Learning and Research Related Resources from partners such as Municipalities for the different academic and extra mural activities that run concurrently in any academic year.
2.0 PROMOTION OF A RESEARCH CULTURE AT HEEDMORINE MUNICIPAL INSTITUTE
The management of Heedmorine Municipal Institute consciously promotes the entrenchment of a Research Culture at Heedmorine Municipal Institute via making resources available, co-ordination of Post Graduate studies, publishing research results, running of a sound community outreach program, running of research linked Fellowships, Internships Bursaries, Scholarships & Studentships and invitation of Guest Lecturers and Visiting Professors from peer institutions.
2.1 MAKING LEARNING AND RESEARCH RELATED RESOURCES AVAILABLE
To date, the Institute has mobilized and/or solicited for use of the following Learning and Research Related Resources:
(a) Financial Aid Advisory Services from various funding institutions
(b) Web based Study Guides and academic information via the our website: www.heed-ngo.org.za
(c) Books and Audio Visual Facility at the Municipal Library
(d) Information & Communication Technology (ICT) via Online support from the Municipal Library
(e) Heedmorine Municipal Institute has sought a “Vote of Confidence” from the National Research
Foundation
(f) Municipal Practical sites and Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) practical facilities such as Workshops, Farms, Grounds/Gardens, Water Treatment Sites/Labs, Accounting Offices, Admin Offices, Sewerage Sites/Labs, IT Centres, Construction Sites, Board Rooms, Community Halls, Fresh Produce Markets, Municipal Clinics, Busses, Bakkies, Sedans, Tractors etc. Note that Objectives of Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) and Regulation of Student Conduct During WIL are available in our Prospectus
2.2 CO-ORDINATION OF POST GRADUATE STUDIES
In support of the Research drive, Heedmorine Municipal Institute co-ordinates at least 1 Post Graduate Study program per year with a target of at least 8 research plans/proposals commissioned in both basic and applied research. A further target is to engage 200 graduates in the said research per year who will churn out research results that benefit at least 5 000 businessmen and farmers.
2.3 PUBLISHING OF PERIODICALS
Heedmorine Municipal Institute will through its Heedmorine Press publish a host of pamphlets, booklets, brochures, leaflets, books etc. As a related matter, Heedmorine Press has set out a publication schedule wherein 1 quarterly periodical will be published with research results that will reach a target readership of 20 000 community members, businessmen and farmers. In particular, the following periodical will be commissioned and run by Heedmorine Municipal Institute:

2.4 COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The strategic plan for 2011 till 2025 is that Heedmorine Municipal Institute will run Community Outreach programs that will be designed and/or revised to ensure that research results and other resources are mobilized to benefit 20 community projects annually.
2.5 FELLOWSHIP, INTERNSHIP, BURSARIES, SCHOLARSHIP AND STUDENTSHIP
In aid of research, Heedmorine Municipal Institute runs “research linked” Fellowships, Internships Bursaries, Scholarships & Studentships (FIBSS).
2.6 GUEST LECTURER AND ITS VISITING PROFESSOR PROGRAM
In order to enhance academic excellence, the Institute has introduced a Guest Lecturer program which has incorporated a sub program that entails the engagement of visiting Professors and professionals (local and foreign) who are suitably qualified at Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels. Guest Lecturers and Visiting Professors will be fully engaged in research and development activities at Heedmorine Municipal Institute and/or at its collaborating partner institutions. It must be emphasized that unless otherwise stated, all theoretical presentations from Guest Lecturers and/or Visiting Professors from peer institutions will be conducted during Tutorial Sessions.
3.0 HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH
The multifaceted nature of research has inevitably compelled Heedmorine Municipal Institute to declare it a competence of the REWICO Centre for co-ordination of academic activities. Besides meeting “Pre-Set Research, Publication, Post Graduate Co-ordination and Outreach Targets,” the facets that are linked to research include the following:
- Registration as a student or a member of staff (Full Time or Guest Lecturer)
- Receipt of a research linked Bursary
- Receipt of a research linked Internships and Post Diploma Study Programs (i.e. Fellowships, Scholarships and Studentships)
To participate in the Guest Lecturer and its Visiting Professor Program you must complete Form APP 101
Participation in the “Fellowships, Internships, Bursaries, Studentship and Scholarships” is subject to internal regulatory scrutiny. We advise that you download and read our engagement framework which is explained in our Fellowships, Internships, Bursaries, Scholarships & Studentship (FIBSS) Regulations
To participate in the Bursary Applications Selection and Forwarding Program you must download and complete Form FIBSS 101
Internships and Post Diploma Study Programs (i.e. Fellowships, Scholarships and Studentships) will be advertised on www.heed.org.za and/or in print media with application procedures and terms and conditions attached.
